When it comes to choosing your niche, there are several crucial considerations that run deeper than basic demographics. Let’s explore these often overlooked but essential factors to help you find the perfect niche for your business.

1. Start with You

This step is often missed and one that is central to my philosophy of building an aligned business.

Begin with self-reflection.

What do you want to be known for? What kind of work ignites your passion and taps into your superpowers?

This approach helps you create a vision of who you would love to work with, and on whom you can have the most impact.

Instead of chasing a ‘profitable’ niche, focus on where your skills and passions align. This way, you can craft genuine, heartfelt messaging and solution that resonates with your dream clients.

2. Reflect on Past Clients

Think about the people you’ve already worked with.

These could be past clients or individuals you’ve supported in your personal or professional life.

Look for common themes. What did you love helping them with? What did they seek your help for? Identifying these patterns can reveal the needs and wants of those who are most likely to benefit from your services.

This reflection not only builds confidence but also highlights your ability to meet specific needs. It can also help to understand who NOT to work with, ensuring your niche will ignite rather than drain you.

3. Identify Who Inspires You

Consider who you love working with and who inspires you. Aligned marketing starts with you and extends to those you are passionate about supporting.

This might be a new group of people who could benefit from your unique talents, or a really specific subset of individuals you have already been working with.

When you love your work and the people you work with, your enthusiasm shines through in your messaging and actions, making marketing more effective and enjoyable. You get excited and can move from sales to service.

4. Assess Their Readiness

Evaluate where your dream clients are in their journey.

Are they ready to take action and buy? Are they prepared to hear your message? It’s not your job to convince anyone of your value—that’s exhausting and often futile.

Instead, focus on those who are ready and open to what you offer. Create clear, compelling messaging that speaks directly to them. Use phrases like “if you are ready to…” or “this is for you if…” to call out those who are prepared to engage with your services.

This critical component is often overlooked with a consequence of you feeling like no-one wants what you have to offer or getting trained in your business trying to convince people of your value rather than engaging only with those actively seeking what you have to offer.

5. Align with Your Work Preferences

Reflect on the type of work you love to do and who it best serves.

Consider how your clients prefer to consume content or engage with you and what fits your lifestyle and schedule. For instance, if you’re a yoga teacher with a busy family life, offering online classes might suit other moms with similar schedules.

Or, if you prefer group work over one-on-one sessions, identify those seeking group experiences. This alignment ensures you serve clients in a way that feels fulfilling and sustainable for both of you.

Summary

The five unconventional yet imperative considerations when choosing your niche are:

  1. YOU: Your passions, superpowers, and what you want to be known for.
  2. Past Clients: Patterns and common themes from those you’ve previously helped.
  3. Who Inspires You: Those who energize and uplift you.
  4. Readiness: Clients who understand what you are about and are ready to engage and act.
  5. Work Preferences: The kind of work you love and who it best serves.
